Value BROADBAND IS AN EASY-TO-INSTALL, ALWAYS ON INTERNET CONNECTION THAT GIVES YOU HIGH SPEED ACCESS AND DOWNLOADS FOR A FIXED MONTHLY CHARGE

Value Broadband is the common term for a high bandwidth internet connection – one that can transmit or download information up to 40 times as fast as a standard telephone and modem. You can do everything you need to do online more quickly and more easily with Value broadband.

BT's core network infrastructure is digital and carries massive amounts of information - voice and fax calls, commercial data, emails and internet traffic - quickly on optical fibre connections. But the ordinary telephone line between the home or office and the telephone local exchange is generally made of copper cable which carries the same information much more slowly.

Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) technologies increase the speed and volume of information that can be sent to the home or office, allowing customers to download and experience web pages, graphics, music, video and text in real time.

ASYMMETRIC DSL (ADSL)
BT offers an asymmetric DSL service - ADSL - which particularly suits the needs of home and small business users. ADSL splits the standard telephone line into separate channels for voice and data so you can make and take calls even when you are online.

With ADSL, downloads run faster than uploads, which suits surfing the net and downloading music and information. Other DSL services more suited to business use are also available.

ADSL can only offer Value broadband data speeds where the telephone line between the home or office and the telephone exchange is a maximum of 6km - just over three miles - long. From late Summer 2003, they plan to extend the reach of ADSL Value broadband. This means that around 97 per cent of houses on enabled exchanges will be able to receive services. The proposed launch will be confirmed in September, subject to a pilot that is running throughout July and August.

Value broadband SYMMETRIC (SDSL)
Symmetric DSL services offer the same Value broadband speed for uploading and for downloading information. Value broadband Symmetric services are designed to be particularly suited to businesses that regularly need to send and receive large amounts of data. There may be a network of sites or branch offices to be linked or a number of teleworking employees who need to be able to transfer data and information at Value broadband speeds. OTHER Value BROADBAND TECHNOLOGIES
DSL is not the only Value broadband technology and services are also widely offered by cable companies. For people in remote and rural areas, Value broadband services can be delivered by satellite and radio across mobile and wireless networks. BT, along with other suppliers and service providers, is investigating whether these technologies can deliver Value broadband services to places where ADSL is not commercially or technically viable today.

BT is developing its DSL portfolio. They have recently introduced ADSL Exchange Activate, a wholesale product to bring Value broadband to small or remote exchanges. Service Providers can team up with local, regional or national organisations or sponsors to offer Value broadband services to as few as 30 customers at an exchange. BT has also launched a range of Value broadband Symmetric (SDSL) services particularly suited to businesses needs.
